STEMmersion Day 5 (May 22, 2019)

Today we went back to The Narrows but instead of Kayaking, we hiked on the path and visited the nature reserve. At the nature reserve I found a glass case of preserved butterflies. I was specifically drawn to the monarch butterflies that were in the case because I loved their color. I sketched a picture of the butterfly in my journal which helped me learn more about the differences between moths and butterflies.

I leaned that butterflies keep their wings open and out while resting but moths keep them tucked in. Also I leaned that caterpillars make a chrysalis to turn into butterflies but moths come from cocoons. Overall, drawing in my journal gave a better understanding of, not just Monarch butterflies, but butterflies in general.

For our journals we were required to find a leaf so this is the leaf that I found. It was surrounded by small purple flowers. This leaf appealed to me because I rarely see leaves with 3 on one stem which was very unique. They have a line down the middle and symmetrical lines on each side. They also kind of smell like rich chocolate.
